Three "Must Ask Questions" for Moms Who Want To Start a Business

I've realized over recent months that moms rarely do enough soulsearching and research before jumping into a home business. To helpyou dig deep and give this the careful consideration that it deserves,I have three 'must ask questions' for you. Before you make adecision, especially before you spend any money on an idea – sit downwith a pad of paper and do some journaling on each question. Then,if you're married, take these questions and your thoughts to yourhusband and talk about all of it.

I’m a huge fan of Scott Stratten (UnMarketing.com) and I loved his recent rant about ‘looking the part’ in business. (On BizSlap.com.) If you haven’t been there yet to listen, you should definitely do that before you read any farther. I wouldn’t be a good Mom if I didn’t warn you in advance that he uses a colorful expletive that you won’t want kids to hear – so slip on the headphones or make sure little ears are in another room.

Get Creative with Childcare

Balancing Your ActAs an entrepreneurial parent, you juggle the roles of head chef, chauffer, nurse, janitor and more. Being there for your kids may be the very reason you have a home-based business, yet this myriad of roles makes carving time out for your business challenging at best. By developing a wide variety of cost-effective childcare options, you can achieve a balance between spending time with your children and building your business. There are times when working at home while watching the kids goes without a hitch. They’re playing a game in the other room, doing their homework at the kitchen table, or gabbing with their friends while you’re making your calls, filing your paperwork, and crossing items off of your to do list with efficiency. There are other times, though, when parenting and working requires a superhuman ability to focus. Once, as I was doing a phone interview with the local media, the Pokémon theme was blaring on the TV, a toy was singing, “If you are happy and you know it, clap your hands,” and my son came over saying, “Mommy, Mommy, Mommmmmeee….” The reporter was amazed that I could concentrate on writing an article for my newsletter with such distractions. The key is honing the ability to let go of the distracting voices while still listening for cues that your children really need help.

One of the problems you face when marketing your product on the Internet is that the whole transaction is based on trust and proving value. Your web site plays the crucial role of presenting what you are about, why clients need you, how you can help them, and to build trust. You need to prove the value of your product to the customer so that they aren't afraid to risk their hard earned money. Building trust is especially important if you are selling a higher priced item and people need assurance that your product/service is "worth" the money. Here are some proven ideas to build trust with customers by letting them "dip their toe" in the water and try your services in low risk ways. After they experience the value for themselves, then they will be ready and eager to "jump in" and purchase your full-blown or tie-in product offering.

I used to see the above title screaming the beginning of an ad. These types of ads still make me a little nervous. Bells ring in my head that what I'm about to read is a downright scam. However, in the last few months, I've realized something rather interesting. You can make money while you sleep. Here's how... Your Web Page If you're selling something, it's a good idea to be selling your product or service on the web. Your site can be accessed in the middle of the day or night. My last page statistics for BizyMoms.com told me the following... ACTIVITY LEVEL BY HOUR 12:00 a.m. EST: 1221:00 a.m. EST: 2032:00 a.m. EST: 1033:00 a.m. EST: 534:00 a.m. EST: 195:00 a.m. EST: 336:00 a.m. EST: 347:00 a.m. EST: 94 I can tell you this, if I had a normal store front, there's no way I would have been open at these times (I won't even go into how cheery I'd be during those hours).
Your Friend: "Wow, you make this look so easy -- how do you do it?" You: "It's easy -- I've been doing this for years." Your Friend: “Well, could you show me how to do it? As a matter a fact, I have a few other friends that would be interested in this too.....” It's a fact -- every person knows something a little bit better than the next. Now, what can you do with this little bit of knowledge? I decided to ask booklet expert, Paulette Ensign, who is the Founder, CEO and Chief Visionary of Tips Products International. Liz: Paulette, can anyone write a booklet and make money from it? Paulette: Yes, by all means. I hold the belief that everyone has something they want the world to know about and that an informational tips booklet can be a great way to do that. All the information that has been part of daily life for years and years can easily be recycled into tips booklets that can function as a market tool, a source of income, or both. Liz: How do you figure out what topic you should write about? Paulette: Choosing a topic comes from what you know best. For those people who have

One of the toughest parts of starting a home business is dealing with all the legal and tax issues. This may seem complicated and scary, and may keep you from even starting a business. But don't let it be an excuse for delay. Just educate yourself. Q: Do I need a business license and what type of permits will I need? A: This varies by city. To find out if you'll need the following licenses or permits, call your local county or city clerk's office. They are usually located at City Hall. Seller's or Resale Permit -- If your state has a sales tax, and you plan to sell goods in-state, you will need this permit. It allows you to avoid paying sales tax on supplies when you buy from wholesalers. Food Permit -- If you plan to make or sell food, you'll need this one. Expect to receive a visit from your local health department. Zoning Permit -- Don't mess around with this one. Visit your local planning department or city zoning board to see if your area is zoned for a home business. State occupational licenses -- Day-care operators especially need to check this out. Your State affairs office should be able to help. Q: Do I need a tax ID number? A: If you have employees, are in a partnership or are incorporated, you will need a federal

Does the idea of starting your own business from home sound appealing? Has finding the right one stumped you? Here are four ways to help you find the business of your dreams. What are your interests? What types of things do you enjoy doing. Yes, you can love your job!! Everyone is born with a special talent that sets them apart from others. Your job is to figure out what that talent is and find out a way to turn it into a business. One lady I profiled in my book, “The Stay-at-Home Mom’s Guide To Making Money” had always liked horses. When she was younger she didn't have a horse of her own. So she would groom and feed other people's just for the chance to ride. Now that she is an adult, she has turned that interest into a pet sitting business. While she takes care of the smaller critters, she has niched herself in the area of horse care. What are your hobbies? Is your hobby candle making, painting portraits, herb gardening...? These are all

It's a Mom Thing

I have tried in the past to explain to childless friends why I left a good, high-paying job to work at home, to stay home with my kids. I've never really felt that I could adequately describe the reasons I want to be home with my girls. I've never felt that I had successfully convinced anyone that I'm doing what I really want to do. They still seem to think that I'm sacrificing something, or missing out, just so I don't have to put my kids in daycare. Now Mother's Day, (my favorite holiday) is right around the corner. After all, who wouldn't like to have a day dedicated just to them? The only thing that could be better than Mother's Day would be Cheryl's Day, but I don't think that is too likely. So I'll settle for Mother's Day. A few years ago, my daughter made a huge tissue paper Mother's Day carnation corsage for me. She presented it to me on Mother's Day morning, and of course expected that I would wear it all day. And I did. I wore it to church, to breakfast, to the mall ... from other mothers I received smiles and knowing glances, from non-mothers, I received stares and curious looks. I could tell they were wondering what would possess me to attach several square yards of multicolored tissue paper to my chest. I overheard one of the young
