Dale King Interviews Jim Connolly

Dale King: Today I'm interviewing one of Europe's leading sales and marketing coaches, Jim Connolly.

Hello Jim, how are you?

Jim Connolly: I’m great Dale – Thanks for asking!

Dale King: Jim, would you mind explaining to my readers exactly what it is that you do?

Jim Connolly: Sure, I provide free marketing ideas and answers to small businesses all over the world; through www.jimconnolly.com and my newsletter.  I have also recently launched an ‘ideas blog’ at http://theideasblog.com  In addition, I provide a 12-month marketing program exclusively for small businesses – where we work together on a one-to-one basis, via the telephone.  I am also the Author of The Motivation Master Class audio program.

Dale King: Wow...that's a pretty impressive body of work. Jim, tell my readers how and when you got started marketing on the Internet.

Jim Connolly: I have worked in marketing for over 20 years and had my own business since 1996.  I am a real technology geek; I was the first person I knew to have an Internet connection or an email address!

I got started with Internet marketing around 1995; the Internet was a VERY different place back then.  The low number of users meant that for my business (which back then was working face-to-face with small businesses), there were just too few local businesses online to make Internet marketing viable.  Instead, I started to study trends and then as Internet usage increased, I was ready to give my clients the information they needed to generate the results they needed online.

Dale King: How important has goal-setting been to your overall success?

Jim Connolly: I have always been a bit of a maverick when it comes to goal setting Dale.  I am very much from the Steven K. Scott school of thinking; which says that dreams are what motivate us rather than goals.  No one with a dream has to write it on a piece of card and read it out each morning – it’s burnt onto the retina of their mind and it energizes them every minute of every day. Dreams are fuel behind every dynamic person I have ever met or studied.

I first realized this when I studied people like Bill Gates, Richard Branson, Steve Jobs, Alan Sugar – all of whom have achieved massive success because they were propelled forward by a dream!  I have also spoken with some of the world’s best-known movie stars, a few world boxing champions and many top musicians – all of whom told me they were propelled to success because of a massive dream; not a list of goals. I have found that a person with a dream is literally unstoppable.

Dale King: You make a very valid and interesting point. How important has reading been to your overall success?

Jim Connolly: That’s a great question Dale. To me, that’s like asking how important oxygen has been to my success! Like you Dale, I am a ferocious reader. I spend a couple of hours most days reading something that feeds my brain or my soul. In my opinion, a commitment to reading is essential for anyone serious about enjoying a great life.

Dale King: If you could recommend one book that all Internet marketers should read, what would it be?

Jim Connolly: Another superb question.  The book I recommend to everyone in ANY business is always the same.  It’s called; The Five Major Pieces To The Life Puzzle.  It’s written by one of my mentors, Mr Jim Rohn.

Dale King: In your opinion, what technology has changed Internet Marketing the most over the last 5 years?

Jim Connolly: It has to be the mass market development of broadband Internet.  Broadband as a mass-market product is what has made online video and audio possible and allowed all of us to become podcasters, radio hosts or video stars.

Dale King: What person or persons have influenced you the most in your lifetime, and how?

Jim Connolly: My mother was the single biggest influence in my life.  As a poor kid living in a slum, she always believed in me and supported me. My dad passed away in 1992 and is my hero. Two great people who I was blessed to have as parents.

Dale King: If you could give my readers one piece of advice, what would it be?

Jim Connolly: Great question.  The best advice I can give anyone is that they should learn how "The Law of Return" works.  Never try to take out from a situation, until you have put something in.  Don’t expect the reward BEFORE the work.  That abs machine won’t flatten your gut in 30 days – that diet won’t make you skinny in a week.  You have sow the seeds and tend the land before you can reap the harvest!  Whenever you try to fool The Law of Return you fail.

Dale King: I couldn't agree more. Thank you very much, Jim. I appreciate you taking the time to do this interview. Best of luck with your new blog!

Jim Connolly: Dale, it’s been a privilege speaking with you.
